What Is Urogynecology?

Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, also known as Urogynecology is a subspecialty within Obstetrics and Gynecology and Urology which is dedicated to treat female pelvic floor disorders.

Urinary or fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, painful bladder syndrome and prolapse (bulging) of the vagina, bladder and the uterus – are the most common issues that are managed by this subspecialty.

TREATMENT OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

Thousands of women in India silently suffer from urinary incontinence as they are not aware of the cutting edge treatment that is readily available. Well, the majority of these women are hesitant to consult with a male urologist. They opine they can’t explain the problem to male practitioner, given the gender barrier.

URGE INCONTINENCE is when women feel the urgent need to pass urine and leak urine before reaching the toilet.

  • They need to go to the toilet many times in the day and night.
  • Most of these women respond to drugs and lifestyle changes.

STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE is when woman leaks urine with coughing sneezing laughing loudly.

  • They respond to Physiotherapy when it is mild.
  • In severe cases we have an option of laser treatment.

TOTAL INCONTINENCE is inflicted due to surgical injury to bladder or ureter during gynecological surgery. In most cases, it requires surgical repair or reconstruction.

PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE & VAULT PROLAPSE is a condition in which the uterus or the vaginal vault protrude through vaginal introitus. It requires the expertise of a trained practitioner in urology and gynecology to treat such cases and Dr. Lalitha is well versed with the same.

RECURRENT URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS INCLUDING GENITO URINARY TUBERCULOSIS IS ANOTHER WIDELY OBSERVED UROLOGICAL PROBLEM IN WOMEN.

UROLOGICAL PROBLEMS DURING PREGNANCY, ESPECIALLY URINARY INFECTIONS AND HYDRONEPHROSIS WILL REQUIRE SPECIAL ATTENTION OF A UROLOGIST AND GYNECOLOGIST.
